The days get shorter. The trip gets deeper. A day party that moves sideways on Swanston Street — 8 hours, multiple venues, 1 ticket.
Shake loose under the chandeliers and behind the bins in a live mixtape of music, performance, art and film.
Day Tripper laces Melbourne Town Hall, Capitol Theatre, and Max Watt’s with a big old day party in the middle of the long weekend. It’s post-punk, techno, hip hop, disco, and dance. Prepare for a block’s worth of day tripping that splashes into adjoining arcades and laneways. All in one ticket.
Melbourne Town Hall will host Yasiin Bey (FKA Mos Def) as he performs his tribute to the late, great rapper’s rapper, MF DOOM. Keep exploring the main stage and balcony to find Bar Italia, London’s elusive post-punks, who are out of the shadows and in Melbourne/Naarm for the first time. Delve into rhythmic workouts from Indiana’s Pulitzer-prize nominated composer Jlin. Electrelane’s Verity Susman and Wire’s Matthew Simms unite to make earth-bound and alien jams in their new duo, MEMORIALS. Coburg’s jazz-funk journeymen Surprise Chef will be cooking it up. And 79-year-old jazz diva and disco queen Asha Puthli will be there in full glamour.
A big lineup featuring esoteric outsider Alastair Galbraith and pathologically prolific Richard Youngs. The Kiwi heart-wrencher Sarah Mary Chadwick will be on the ivories. Your beloved local community radio station Triple R will be there on the day to bring you all of the Day Tripper action. Live and on demand from the Melbourne Town Hall. Also, the brass band we’ve invited intends to get freaky.
British indie rock snivelers The Tubs are in town for the first time. WET KISS are bringing their glam rock pop explosion. Crab-dancing slacker rock icons Scott & Charlene’s Wedding are on the bill. POSSESHOT will be rapping words and flipping birds. And Polito will be closing things down with improvised techno.
Across the road at Max Watt’s, it’s HTRK’s 21st birthday. The cult Melbourne/Naarm duo celebrate their classic discography with an extended live set and a curated lineup (and curated playlist) featuring Astrid Sonne, CS + Kreme with James Rushford, Emelyne, Pandora's Jukebox, Still House Plants and YL Hooi.
The organ will be blasting, Candela Capitán's The Death at the Club will invite us into parallel realms, Clubble will be running at each other at furious speeds, and Amber McCartney—the liminal dance maggot from last year’s Tiny Infinite Deaths—is back and ready to writhe with a new performance.
Day Trippers get priority entry to 24 Hour Rock Show, Jeremy Deller’s marathon of fearless music documentaries screening at The Capitol.
Go deep like dancefloor heat on a wind-bitten day.
